Today’s Wordle was theoretically difficult, with an unfamiliar W at the beginning and a double R in the middle.

WordleBot rated it an average of 4.3, which is higher than the standard 4 most games are equal to. I managed it at 4/6 myself, so it’s a bit below average, despite a poor start that left me with 77 possible answers after my initial guess of CRATE.

With no vowels revealed in my opening guess, I wanted to play a couple more a second time around and went with ROUND. This proved very fortunate, as it gave me a green O in position #2 and I left out the R as the starting letter.

WordleBot said there were only 7 possible solutions left, although I didn’t know that at the time (you can only use WordleBot once the game is over). However, I could see that there weren’t many options, and I only came up with 4 myself: worry, sorry, lory, and ponies. The ones I missed were FORGO, MORPH, and WORMY.

All of my choices ended in a Y and three had a double R before that, so I decided to head down this path and played SORRY afterward. I wasn’t right, but anxiety seems like a more likely answer than a British LORRY, and that was proven when the five letters turned green.

We hope you solved it too and found Wordle today to be a reasonably straightforward challenge.

Wordle #586 was so difficult that WordleBot reported that it took 4.6 guesses to solve. That’s really high: anything above 4 is more difficult than normal, and once you get past 4.5 you’re in very difficult territory.

There are several reasons why this is difficult. For starters, it has an F in fourth place, something that only happens in 35 of the wordle’s 2,309 games. Placing a double-E in the middle isn’t uncommon—59 games have an aptitude somewhere—but it still makes the word hard to guess. .

In addition, the word BEEFY itself is not very common; It’s definitely on the vernacular side of things.

Fortunately, I was very lucky with my second guess after the CRATE editorial left me with an E.

My second word in these situations is BLEND which appeared on the trump card, giving me green B and green E and leaving me with only one possible solution. Lucky me!

What is wordle?

If you’re on this page, then you definitely know what Wordle is already, and you’ve probably already been playing it for a while. And even if you haven’t been playing it, you’ve certainly heard of it by now, because it’s a viral pun that swept the world last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We have a full guide to the game on our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher, here are the basics.

What is wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five letter word every day. You get six guesses, each guess revealing a little bit of information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the correct place, it turns green. If it is in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it is not in the answer at all, it turns gray. Simple, huh?

It is played online via Wordle site Or the Crossword app for The New York Times (iOS/Android), which is completely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone every day, which means you’re competing against the rest of the world, not just against yourself or the game. Then the puzzle resets each day at midnight to your local time, giving you a new challenge and a chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

Wordle’s rules are pretty straightforward, but with some curveballs thrown in for good measure.

One. Letters in the answer and in the appropriate place turn green.

2. Letters in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters not included in the answer are greyed out.

four. The answers are never plural.

5. Characters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two uni-characters, they could both turn yellow, and they both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in the Wordle dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for example.

7. You do not have to include the correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you are playing hard.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the Daily Wordle before midnight in your time zone.

10. All answers are from Wordle’s list of 2309 solutions. But…

Eleven. Wordle will accept a larger set of words as guesses – about 10,000 of them. For example, you can guess the plural form like WORDS. It certainly wouldn’t be true (see point 4 above), but Wordle would accept it as a guess.
