A big-budget adaptation of developer Naughty Dog’s primary PlayStation title – which, by the way, is our top pick for The best video games of the 2000s – The Last of Us on HBO will also include elements of its sequel, Our last 2and sometimes “significantly deviate” from the source material, said show director Neil Druckman.
The official synopsis for the HBO series reads as follows:[The Last of Us] It takes place 20 years after the destruction of modern civilization. Joel, an experienced survivor, is hired to smuggle Eli, a 14-year-old girl, from the oppressive quarantine zone. What begins as a small mission quickly becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both have to traverse the United States and depend on each other to survive.”
The Mandalorian Himself, Pedro Pascal, plays Joel on the show with his colleague Game of thrones Alumna Bella Ramsey is in tow as Ellie. Merle Dandridge, Nick Offerman, Gabriel Luna, Storm Reid, Anna Torv and Nico Parker have also been confirmed to be involved. Meanwhile, The Last of Us’s original voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who voices Joel and Ellie, will appear in some capacity.
There has been no confirmation of how many seasons HBO is planning for the series yet. However, Baker introduced the vague window of “three, four seasons” necessary to match the game’s story rhythms at an appropriate pace — rather than limiting the story to one hasty season.
“I think, incidentally, you can tell this story more effectively, because trying to condense that 16-hour experience into [a few] Impossible Hours … beyond the point of distillation, to reduction,” Baker said in an interview with Game Spot (Opens in a new tab). “I think being able to casually do that and go, ‘We’ll do this for like, three or four seasons’ and be able to figure out roughly 1:1 [the story of the game] It presents a great opportunity for more people to experience it.”
HBO has made a passing reference to “future seasons” after the initial first season, although any continuation will likely depend on the success of the first season.
