LG to launch new smart monitors that can open documents without a PC —but they’re not 4K

New details have emerged of two so-called smart monitors from LG that will go on sale on September 29 in Japan; the larger of the two is the 31.5-inch 32SR50F-W which is a variant of the 32SQ730S-W and the 32SQ780S-W.

Like its predecessors, it integrates a full fledged operating system (LG’s proprietary WebOS) that allows it to view and edit document files (Powerpoint, Excel etc) without the need to connect to another computer. Use cases include the ability to remote connect to Windows 365, Chrome Remote Desktop and Azure Virtual.

In essence, this is a business PC replacement or a thin client without the price tag, great if businesses want their employees to work from home and remotely access virtual desktops. Shame though that LG decided to opt for a full HD resolution rather than 4K. The current Ultra HD model sells for around $400.

We don’t know yet whether the monitor will be available with a height-adjustable Ergo Stand – which allows the display to be positioned close to the edge of a desk (check it in action in our review of the LG DualUp monitor) – or if it will offer PIP or KVM features.y

What we do know though is that there will be a smaller 27-inch version and both have a new stand with a hole in it for better cable management. Pictures also show a USB hub with four ports while a video of the two monitors reveal a remote control, a VESA mount, Bluetooth capabilities, IPS technology and a pair of 5W speakers.

Previous models include HDMI in and out as well as a LAN port. No built-in webcam though and that’s a bit of a bummer which would have transformed it into a potent all-in-one (AIO) PC. LG claims that the previous models sold very well which may explain why the company decided to introduce new models with a lower entry point.

For those looking for a much bigger experience (albeit at a higher price point), LG has the 43SQ700S-W which is a 43-inch 4K monitor with more connections, 65W power delivery (great to charge your laptop), better sound but no VESA mounts.

Archrival Samsung also unveiled its own smart monitor, the M8, last year. Like its LG counterpart, we found that it promised basically to do everything.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra could come with a major video recording upgrade

Based on the rumors we’ve come across so far, it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will bring with it the most significant upgrades when Samsung launches its next batch of flagship phones – and it looks like this covers video recordings too.

Known leaker Ice universe (via Notebookcheck) He hinted that the Ultra model will be able to record 4K footage and up to 120 frames per second (fps). This is impressive – but the tipster notes that this feature is still in the “testing” phase and may not eventually be included.The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra launched last year is capable of recording 4K video using its quad-lens rear camera, but only at up to 60 frames per second. The iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and Google Pixel 8 Pro all have the same ceiling in terms of resolution and frame rate.

As our OnePlus 9 Pro review and Sony Xperia 1 V review will tell you, this wouldn’t be the first time 4K/120fps video recording has been seen on a smartphone – but it’s something you can’t get right now on Samsung’s flagship devices, Apple and Google.

Improved sensor

Samsung has already shown off some of the new video capture capabilities of its camera sensors that we expect to see in the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but this is our first inkling of a new high in terms of video quality.

While the 200MP main camera rating is not expected to change between the Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy 24 Ultra, the current core sensor technology is tipped to be upgraded, allowing for faster processing.

Add to that the introduction of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, and you can see where the extra grunt required to reach 4K/120fps comes from. Just make sure you have plenty of internal storage space for the resulting video files.

We should see the Ultra version appear alongside two other Samsung Galaxy S24 models later this month, with January 17 likely being the big launch day. Other upgrades that appear to be in the pipeline include plenty of AI features.

 

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 may have a massive design change

It looks like this is going to be a big year for foldable phones as the Google Pixel Fold is expected to land and OnePlus is also working on its first foldable phone. But it will probably be less important for Samsung, because the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be very similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, we may see much bigger changes with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6.

This is according to the leaker @tweet (via Android Police), who claimed — in response to a leak about the Z Fold 5 having nearly identical dimensions to the Z Fold 4 — that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 will have a “significant change in form factor.”

They weren’t more specific than that, but said they recommend waiting for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 rather than buying the Z Fold 5.

We’d take this leak with a pinch of salt, because while The Source has leaked things thoroughly in the past, they don’t have a great track record yet. This is also too early for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 leaks, as the phone is unlikely to land until July or August of 2024.

However, since the main changes to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are just the hinge and chipset construction, and the price of the Pixel Fold is supposed to be high, this may not be the year to buy a high-end foldable device, so it could be worth the wait. To see if there is any truth to this Z Fold 6 leak.

What form could the Galaxy Z Fold 6 take?

This leak just makes us wonder what the change in form factor could be. One possibility is that the shape will be changed to allow for a wider cover screen, as you’ll find on the Oppo Find N2.

This should make the Cover Screen look more like a regular smartphone screen, while the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a narrow Cover Screen that is a bit difficult to use.

Samsung has already expanded the cover screen on this phone a bit compared to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, so the company is clearly aware of the issue, but it’s still not wide enough.

Alternatively, if this is really a ‘major’ change in the form factor, maybe Samsung will take inspiration from the likes of the current Huawei Mate XS 2, which has one large foldable display, but remains usable when folded in half, like the screen on the outside and not Inside. We doubt it, because it’s a design that Huawei has also moved away from (according to the recent release of the Huawei Mate X3).

We’ve also seen Samsung experiment with other concept foldable form factors, including a much larger form factor that opens up to more laptops, and some slide-and-roll concepts.

These are, we think, too much of a change for Samsung to replace their existing form factor with, and in the case of the foldable and slide-out options, the Fold name wouldn’t really fit.

As such, our best guess at the moment is just a change in the aspect ratio to allow for a wider cover screen, but whatever the change is, it could make Samsung’s best foldable phone of 2024 even more exciting than the upcoming 2023 model.
