External Ophthalmoscope with AR Headset Inspired by Aviation

Medical Devices Company BIONX VISION Launched the new ophthalmic and surgical endoscope augmented reality A headset (AR) to provide surgeons with improved visualization and control. Beyeonics One is inspired by head-mounted display technologies used by pilots and is designed for use in a range of eye procedures, including retinal, cataract, glaucoma and corneal surgeries.

An endoscope is a high-resolution digital imaging platform that allows surgeons to view magnified 3D images of the surgical field. The Israeli company Beyeonics Vision is part of the flight technology operation Elbit . Systems. Efi Zaritzky, Vice President of Marketing at Beyeonics explained:

“We realized that the technological singularity of visualization and control for head-mounted pilots could also create unprecedented value in other areas, particularly surgical procedures.

Delivering accurate information in real time is critical to the quality of pilots’ performance and this is an important common factor between pilots and surgeons.

Beyeonics One is designed to deliver enhanced visual presentation and unified pre-operative data on demand, which can be accessed naturally and controlled by an immersive augmented reality surgical headset. “

Improving surgical outcomes and efficiency

Beyeonics Vision was founded to empower surgeons with surgical digital integration platforms in the operating room. These use improved imaging and advanced processors, Artificial intelligence (AI) and navigation technologies within a console and immersive screen for augmented reality surgical headsets.

Mr. Zaretsky said:

Robotic operations provide surgeons with valuable information and decision guidance that create a synchronized surgical environment.

What sets the Beyeonics One apart is the AR headset. The use of a lightweight, adjustable surgical headset display and control unit overcomes the limitations of microscopy and observation.

Head gestures are seamlessly used to control repetitive functions such as focus, zoom, pan, and lighting, and are also used to switch between different overlays. A purposeful learning and learning experience is enabled by the ability to connect up to three surgical headsets simultaneously, with face-to-face or face-to-face viewing options. 90 degrees and additional steering features.

The goal is to increase the quantity and quality of real-time data presented to surgeons in a seamless manner, increase the signal-to-noise ratio of surgical data, and improve surgical outcomes and surgical efficiency.”

inside the eye

An augmented reality surgical headset places the surgical field directly in front of the surgeon. The untethered visualization and ergonomic design allow for adjustment to a more natural posture, which has been shown to increase the surgeon’s well-being, productivity and professional longevity.

Professor Paulo Eduardo Stanga, Retinal and Vitreous Surgeon and Director of Retina Clinic In London, surgeries were performed on patients using the device. He said:

“I was very impressed with the short learning curve and perhaps most importantly the immersive experience I had as a surgeon. I felt as if I was inside the eye itself during surgery and found this particularly useful when treating the vitreoretinal periphery.

I think this is a game-changing technique in vitreoretinal surgery.”

Additional medical fields

According to Mr. Zaretsky, Beyeonics One will be key to advancing global eye healthcare. He said:

Microscopes are used in every eye surgery. Optical microscopy is an excellent and time-proven method that was invented over 100 years ago, but is limited by incremental improvements. You have reached a plateau.

On the other hand, digital systems can improve orders of magnitude beyond current capabilities. We can anticipate improvements in real-time image processing, along with displaying innovative blended images to surgeons, and are confident that the digital platform will replace standard scopes in every surgical procedure. “

Beyeonics One is a cutting edge platform. The plan for the future is to integrate it with other operating room platforms and provide connectivity for remote teaching. I added:

“We are also working to promote development and offer in additional medical fields such as orthopedics and neurosurgery.

In these areas, the benefits of immersive technologies such as AR and VR are known for their clinical accuracy and efficacy. “
