As @momomo_us reports on Twitter (via Cards video (Opens in a new tab)), Asus recommends that the RTX 4090 have at least an 850W power supply if running an Intel Core i5 or Ryzen 5 CPU. For those running a Core i7, Core i9, Ryzen 7 or 9 chip, that recommendation is pushed to 1000 Watts. For Intel HEDT (High End Desktop) or Threadripper CPUs, the PSU should be 1200 watts, no less.
For the RTX 4080, the base recommendation is 750 watts and that goes for Core i5 and i7 models, or Ryzen 5 or 7. For Core i9 or Ryzen 9 it runs up to 850 watts, and 1000 watts for Threadripper or Intel HEDT.
How about those recommendations for AMD imports RDNA 3 graphics cards? Those who want an RX 7900 XT are looking at exactly the same deal as the RTX 4080-750W for Core i5 or i7 CPUs (and Ryzen 5 or 7), then step up to 850W for a Core i9 or Ryzen 9, and 1,000W for HEDT model.
For the RX 7900 XTX, you’re looking at 850 watts for a Core i5 or i7 (and Ryzen 5 or 7), and 1,000 watts when paired with a Core i9 or Ryzen 9 CPU. For a HEDT chip, the requirements are 1,200 watts, exactly Same with the RTX 4090.
Analysis: Compare and contrast with current generation AMD
It’s interesting to see some official figures from the graphics card maker for RDNA 3 products, though no real surprises here. The RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX in particular were nothing short of too demanding on a PC power supply, but AMD’s flagship pushes things up a notch as the RTX 4090 — with the notable exception of an easier time for those running Core i7 or Ryzen CPUs. 7 (maybe a few users, as not everyone feels the need to push up to a Core i9 or Ryzen 9).
Perhaps most informative is comparing the incoming AMD graphics cards to their previous models, and here we see that the RX 7900 XT really spins things up from the 6900 XT. At least for Core i7/Ryzen 7 and Core i9/Ryzen 9 processors, the 7900 XT requires 100 watts less and 150 watts less, respectively; That’s impressive by comparison. (In fact, the 7900 XT has the same requirements as the 6800 XT, believe it or not.)
There’s no direct comparison to the 7900 XTX, but it keeps things the same as the 6950 XT (all except HEDT where the new graphics card requires a lot more, 200 watts to be exact – but those are more specialized cases).
All in all, this is good news for those looking for a new AMD RDNA 3 GPU down the line, especially considering Nvidia’s current problems with melting cables and the RTX 4090 (with question marks as to whether this issue will affect the RTX 4080 as well).
