IT Companies Donate 15 Million for Flood Relief to Alkhidmat Foundation

Islamabad: Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) and Alkhidmat Foundation have joined hands to help alleviate the miseries of the flood-affectees in these times of crises of unprecedented proportions. P@SHA member companies have collectively donated 15 million to Alkhidmat Foundation and more contributions are on their way. As a responsible association determined to contribute to prosperity of Pakistan, P@SHA initiated the relief drill to help fellow Pakistanis in need.

Alkhidmat Foundation will ensure delivery of aid & sustenance goods on the ground in a transparent, meticulous and diligent manner. These goods include water-proof tents; linen sheets; clean drinking water; dry eatables, e.g. ready-to-eat black channa, dates & biscuits; packaged milk & juices; formula milk powder for children of various ages; stitched or ready-to-wear clothes; plastic shoes; hygiene products; raw food items such as rice, flour and lentils for people stuck in homes due to flooding outside; medical supplies for elderly, sick, mothers & children and dry fodder for the cattle as well.

Chairman Badar Khushnood said that “P@SHA issued an appeal two weeks back to its member companies to donate generously and contribute actively in this need of the hour; which has rendered millions of families displaced as one-third of Pakistan is drowned due to the floods and have lost shelter. Additionally, there are over half a million pregnant women in addition to 2 million children in the need of the baby food. The elderly, sick, expecting mothers and children need immediate medical attention and humanitarian support.”

Secretary General Hira Zainab added that “the floods during this year have been devastating. At P@SHA, we felt our responsibility to bring together the IT industry to play our small part. We brought credible NGOs as partners and also encouraged IT companies to engage in flood relief activities on their own. We are thankful to all industry leaders, who came forward and have donated over 15 million so far. We consider this as the beginning of the CSR activities that P@SHA will be undertaking with the help of the IT industry for flood-affectees.”

P@SHA’s initial estimate was to generate 10 million, but on the back of generous support, empathetic and humanitarian response from IT companies, it is now hopeful that the donations may cross as much as 50 million.

Pakistani freelancers attract export remittances of nearly $400 million in FY22

Pakistani freelancers attracted export remittances of nearly $400 million in the closing financial year 2021-2022 by providing various services online to foreign clients in different countries.

According to the official data released by the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication (MoITT), the remittances inflows in the closing financial year stood at $397.328 million as compared to $396.243 million recorded in the previous financial year 2020-21, showing a modest growth of 2.74% year-on-year.

The contribution of the freelancers accounted for 14.77% of the total ICT export remittances of $2.616 billion recorded by the country during FY22.

Tufail Ahmed Khan, ,CEO Pakistan Freelancers Association said the contribution of the freelancers to attract export remittances has been impressive in Pakistan considering the issues and challenges faced by the fraternity.

Freelancers in Pakistan have maintained their good reputation on the renowned freelancing platforms however they do have immense scope to enhance their contribution to export remittances, he added.

In Pakistan, freelancers should utilize the available bank account services through major local banks to avoid significant deductions of their earnings on multiple channels. Besides, new people should subscribe to freelancing platforms for making money and supporting their country alike, Khan further added.

The export remittances of IT services declined to $265 million in FY22 as compared to $363 million reported in FY21. IT services included web development, logo design, graphic designing, mobile app developers, java developers, etc.

On the other hand, the export remittances from non-IT services surged to $131 million in FY from $33 million reported in FY21. Content writing, translation, virtual assistantship, sales, marketing, account, finance, customers’ services are the major areas of non-IT freelance services.

In the outgoing year, freelancers were also imposed charges through banks on each transaction of income remittances which not only reduce their earnings but also discourage their passion to make money online from foreign clients.

According to estimates, there are nearly 3 million freelancers in Pakistan which put the country among to 5 countries for providing freelance services.
Recently, an association was formed to support freelancers in Pakistan including its resolution of their issues and creating awareness about the opportunities they could avail of. Also, various events were organized to promote freelancing in Pakistan in major cities in recent months.

The concerned ministry is also working on the draft of the National Freelancing Policy aimed at creating facilities for freelancers in Pakistan including capacity building programs of various fields.

PITB & PSEB to work on capacity building in ICT sector: MoU Signed

Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) and Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) have signed an MoU for the facilitation and promotion of local IT industry, startups and freelancers.

The ceremony, presided over by Minister for IT and Higher Education Punjab Raja Yassir Humayun Sarfraz as the chief guest, was held at Arfa Software Technology Park and the MoU was signed by Chairman PITB Azfar Manzoor and MD PSEB Osman Nasir. PITB DG e-Governance Sajid Latif, Director PSEB Sulman Hasan and other senior officials were also present at the occasion.

According to the MoU, PSEB and PITB will collaborate on promotion of local IT industry, entrepreneurship and incubation center development programs. The two organizations will also collaborate on soft skills, language, and technology training programs for ICT companies across the province.

Speaking at the occasion Minister for IT and Higher Education Punjab Raja Yassir Humayun Sarfraz stated that such collaborations lead to lucrative opportunities and greater ICT interventions. “Strengthening the freelance industry through ICT initiatives would help pave the path to economic stability and national prosperity,” he commented.

“PITB will work closely with PSEB to market and extend all possible support to the freelancing talent and start-ups in Punjab through PITB’s initiatives while initiating new projects as well. We will also work on capacity building of local entrepreneurs through business and sales training activities,” Chairman PITB Azfar Manzoor stated.

Appreciating PITB’s role in developing the IT and freelance industry in Pakistan, MD PSEB Osman Nasir said that PSEB shall market and extend all possible support to the freelancing talent and start-ups in Punjab.

The two organizations aim to work on transfer of knowledge in the felid of IT. They would also work on increasing the academia and industry linkages so that both academia and industry can better understand each other’s needs.
