Oh dear, Windows 12 may have just been leaked…by Microsoft and Intel

While there have been many rumors about a possible release of Windows 12, this latest leak seems to be the most concrete evidence we have yet of the new operating system’s existence.

@leaf_hobby hardware leak, which was reported by the edgeDetails on Intel’s Meteor Lake desktop platform. According to those details, Intel reportedly stated that its upcoming CPUs will support Windows 12. The tweet has since been deleted and both Microsoft and Intel have declined to comment to The Verge on the veracity of this report and other rumors.

Prior to this leak, Windows Central’s Zac Bowden mentioned that Microsoft would be Switch to a new geometry table That would see a new version of Windows released every three years. If this turns out to be accurate, it will put the next version, Windows 12, in 2024.

As reported by Bowden The next Windows OS release is called “Next Valley”. Even an image of the operating system was shown at Ignite 2022, where the design was supposed to adapt to different devices and accessories.

Another unwanted rumor

There is also a rumor that Windows 12 might be The first cloud-based operating system, which doesn’t seem particularly far-fetched. If true, it could be hosted off-device and bundled with compute and storage as part of the subscription package. Honestly, I find the future scary.

We already have a lot of software, like Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office, that operate on a subscription-based model. This alone is difficult to deal with if you are on a tight budget and cannot afford the exorbitant prices. But at least these products can easily be replaced by free, open source versions.

Having an operating system that is not installed on a computer is a completely different matter. Variation, virtual desktop settings, has been used by companies for years to support BYOD scenarios, but it’s nothing compared to having the operating system on any cloud-based Windows PC or laptop, with features that are supposed to be standard at a premium price.

Hopefully, this is one set of rumors that will be debunked over time.
