NVIDIA RTX 4090 Founders Edition has become the latest Lovelace flagship model to fall victim to Melted adapter cableAt least according to a user on Reddit.
Previously, we’d only seen reports of this happening to third-party RTX 4090 graphics cards, meaning those made by Nvidia partners, as opposed to the Founders version made by Nvidia itself, which had never before had any documented incident of cable fusion.

A Redditor noted: “I was mostly playing Warzone for the next 7 days, maybe about 2-3 hours at a time. 10/29/22 my screen went blank after about an hour of playing. I tried restarting my computer a few times and still can’t get pic.i checked the gpu and adapter and that was when i saw it.
“I immediately called Nvidia, sent them my card and adapter and within 3 days, had a replacement 4090. I will not be using the new card until Nvidia makes a statement about this issue.”

We’re still waiting for that statement, of course, and the results In Nvidia’s investigation on what exactly is going on here. Meanwhile, it’s troubling to see that one of Nvidia’s own cards has apparently fallen victim to this controversy, when that wasn’t the case previously.
In total, there are now 26 reports on Reddit of RTX 4090 cable melting incidents, which is starting to become an uncomfortably high number. It certainly seems like it’s time for Nvidia to put on its skates and get to the bottom of what a gremlin is in the works here, once and for all.
You may have noticed that the aforementioned RTX 4090 user actually only connected the 3 x 8-pin PCIe power cables, instead of 4. They did this as a point of caution, noting that this is enough to power the graphics card, but keep the power draw to the minimum theoretical maximum (450 watts) than if four cables were connected. Sadly, this obviously didn’t help avoid the cable melting problem (and there are many other registers for 3×8-pin setups that have the melting problem as well).
