Nvidia has released a bug fix for its new software RTX 4090 And the RTX 4080 graphics cards Experience a black (or blank) screen on startup in some unfortunate cases.

This isn’t quite as bad as it seems at first, as the OS will still load fine and display your desktop on your screen as normal, in the end – you just get the blank screen on boot. However, this means that you cannot access the BIOS for example, or see anything at all on the screen, until you get to the operating system environment. And the inability to enter the BIOS can be a big problem in itself.

By all accounts, this problem is rare, so that’s some good news. However, if you were affected, it would obviously be frustrating not to be able to access the BIOS (although at least your computer will still work fine on a desktop).

As Nvidia notes, apply the update only if you’re already experiencing a blank screen — there’s no need to risk a firmware update if you don’t have a tangible problem to solve, of course.

Note that this gremlin in the works has nothing to do with the other well-publicized problem plaguing the RTX 4090 graphics card, the cable melting controversy. (We just heard an update from Nvidia about this issue, by the way, and the culprit, he thinks, appears to be The power adapter is not connected properly.)
