LG’s new rubberized HD display is weird but cool

Oftentimes, big tech companies reveal something truly unprecedented – and LG may have hit gold in innovation with its recent show announcement.

LG Display, sister company that produces panels to LG Electronics, has lifted the lid on what it calls the “world’s first 12-inch high-resolution stretchable display” — a panel that can be distorted by up to 20% of its original size and shape without sustaining any damage.

Yes, you read that right: LG made a stretchable display. And it’s not just “stretchable” in a marketing sense either. This is a small LED display (not OLED, interestingly) that can be stretched, folded, and rolled in the same way as a curved high school ruler – all while maintaining full-color RGB properties and 100ppi resolution.

LG says its new monitor is “thin and lightweight and can be easily installed on curved surfaces such as leather, clothing, furniture, cars and aircraft.” In other words, technology has the potential to prove useful in a variety of industries – not least the worlds of fashion, wearables, mobility and gaming. The flexible material of the screen is based on a highly flexible film-type substrate made of the same special silicone used in contact lenses. As a result, the screen can be extended up to 14 inches, which LG claims offers an “advanced solution [that surpasses] Current foldable and rollable technology.

Nowadays, even very The best foldable phones Suffering from fragile indoor displays and bulky designs that limit their mainstream appeal as viable alternatives to best phones. Despite this, LG’s new display technology could pave the way for a more adventurous mobile future that doesn’t come at the expense of real-world practicality.

Strictly speaking, LG is not the first manufacturer to reveal a stretchable display. Samsung launched a stretchable OLED-based prototype in 2017, and A stretchable TV is great but not very practical in 2021, but neither project has gained much momentum in the years since. By contrast, LG clearly has lofty ambitions for its groundbreaking new display technology.

Whether we see the company’s miniature 12-inch panels attached to clothing and airplanes in the near future, we still have to see — history has taught us not to get too excited about innovations we know so little about. For our money, though, foldables and foldable rolls will be taking over as the coolest new tech products on the block sooner rather than later.
