KEF's new Dolby Atmos speakers include an "acoustic black hole" for better sound

KEF has updated its R Series line of high-performance speakers with a new lineup for 2023. The lineup features audio technology upgrades to deliver superior stereo or home theater sound whether you want a new set of speakers to fit on a bookshelf or stand on the floor.

KEF is known for building premium audio products that deliver cutting-edge sound, such as the KEF LS50 Wireless II stereo speakers. KEF says the seven speakers in the R Series suite are “designed to deliver superior performance with more detail, deeper vision and more excitement.”

This is thanks to a host of tech upgrades, including an improved tweeter gap damper to tame echoes for enhanced detail, a flexible decoupling structure to prevent unwanted vibrations and deliver better quality, and aluminum hybrid bass drivers for more driver trip resulting in deep bass and controlled bass. .

But the standout feature here is a new type of technology that KEF calls Material Absorption Technology, a “maze-like structure” inside each speaker where channels can absorb certain frequencies.

KEF says this creates an “acoustic black hole” that can absorb 99% of unwanted sound from the back of the subwoofer. The result is less distortion, and this promises pure audio performance with incredibly natural sound.

There are seven speakers to choose from catering to a range of preferences. The R11 Meta, R7 Meta, and R5 Meta are floor standing speakers, and the R3 Meta is designed for bookcase or stand placement. They all provide high-fidelity stereo sound and are designed to work in a variety of settings. KEF says it’s the depth and detail at which it excels. The R6 Meta and R2 Meta are center speakers for your home theater setup, providing clear dialogue and designed to work well in a range of rooms.

If you’re looking for Dolby Atmos support, check out the R8 Meta surround sound speaker, which can be wall-mounted or placed on top of another R-series soundbar to deliver immersive sound.

All of the speakers in the range feature the modern, sleek design we’ve come to expect from KEF. There is a choice of three colors, glossy black, glossy white, and walnut. But two distinct finish options will also arrive later in the year: Titanium Gloss Special Edition for the R7 Meta and Indigo Gloss Special Edition for the R3 Meta.

The KEF R series is out now, but you’ll have to wait until summer 2023 for the special edition to be out.
