It looks like the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will be getting a new yellow color option very soon, along with the existing blue, purple, midnight (black), starry (cream), and red — with Apple hoping to boost sales of the two. The least expensive iPhone 14 models.
This comes from a source on Chinese social network Weibo via Mac Otakara and MacRumors. While the initial tipper doesn’t have much of a track record, MacRumors does — and he says he’s heard Apple is planning a product briefing next week.
While we can’t be sure of any rumor or leak until it’s actually confirmed, Apple does have a template for adding new iPhone colors this time of year: green for last year’s iPhone 13, and purple for the iPhone 12 the year before that.
It was all yellow
As in the past, the goal here is to increase sales of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. We’re now halfway through another iPhone launch – the iPhone 15 – so the timing is right to try and generate more interest in existing cell phones.
This is especially important for the iPhone 14 Plus. While it was brought in to replace the iPhone 13 mini, which was barely flying off the shelves, the word on Apple Street is that not many people are buying the iPhone 14 Plus.
This probably isn’t surprising, given that both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are powered by last year’s Apple A15 Bionic chipset. Even Apple itself seems to favor the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Analysis: More colors, please
It’s perhaps a little surprising how much of a difference a new color path can make to a device’s appeal — after all, every internal component remains the same. The yellow iPhone 14 will still run at the same speed and take photos and videos with the same quality.
Or maybe it’s not surprising at all: Hardware aesthetics matter, and for some people at least, the phone’s look and feel is a major consideration when evaluating upgrade options. This shade of yellow is sure to make your iPhone look more unique.
We’re not completely sold on the idea of yellow as a smartphone color. It’s not the kind you see often, and it immediately makes us think of various bodily fluids. On the plus side, there are connotations with sunshine and… er… LEGO minifigures? Or The Simpsons?
What we’re sure of is that Apple’s design team can be trusted to produce a shade of yellow that’s easy on the eye. More color options are always beneficial for consumers, and we should hear about the new iPhone 14 in the coming days.
