Elon Musk doesn’t give you crypto – it’s a scam

In the latest example of Elon Musk’s identity (Opens in a new tab) Security experts have warned that an attacker is targeting the eccentric billionaire’s latest Twitter followers, allegedly misused for cryptocurrency scams.

As I mentioned Computer, a scammer created an anonymous Twitter account, and placed the company’s logo on the profile picture, to create a false sense of legitimacy. Then they began monitoring Elon Musk’s Twitter account for new followers, adding them to a list called “Deal of the Year.”

Opening the list (public and visible to all) of the victims shows a fake tweet from Elon Musk in which he called on his new followers to get cryptocurrency.

bogus gift

“I have decided to randomly select 1,000 new followers who can participate in the biggest crypto giveaway,” the tweet reads, and if nothing else, the obvious grammatical errors should be a red flag.

The tweet also shares a link – freedomgiveaway.net, where victims have to go and complete a short test in order to participate in the “giveaway”. The test is mostly general knowledge, but it doesn’t really matter if you answer correctly or not.

Once finished, the site will ask you for your cryptocurrency address, and promises to send 5,000 BTC to the lucky winners (about $84 million at press time). But before they can deposit into the fancy cryptocurrency, they must first deposit a small amount to an “Elon” address — anywhere between 0.02 and 1 BTC.

The site also lists a lot of fake reviews praising the campaign, in order to make it more believable and try to scam as many gullible investors as possible.

The address where the victims have to deposit the money can be found this link (Opens in a new tab)And, fortunately, it seems Elon Musk’s followers aren’t that naive — the wallet is empty and hasn’t seen any interaction yet. Lets hope it stays that way.
