Apple product owners have noted that the recent update to iOS and tvOS has added support for some of Nintendo’s best consoles.
If you own one of the convertsLegacy consoles – the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and N64 consoles – can now be used on compatible iOS devices and services. It includes arcade apple Game subscription service.
The discovery was first shared on Twitter, with developer Steve Troughton-Smith confirming that the Super Nintendo Wireless Pad works over a Bluetooth connection. It has since been confirmed that the N64 console is also working. NES and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive consoles will likely work as well as of the iOS 16.1 update.
This isn’t the first time Apple has added support for Nintendo consoles to its hardware, either. in WWDC 2022Apple also confirmed its excellent support Nintendo Switch Pro Controller And (admittedly less excellent) Joy-Con controllers.

By the looks of it, Nintendo doesn’t seem to mind making up a Nintendo Switch console that can be used on third-party platforms. Earlier this year, for example, Nintendo’s lineup of retro consoles got Steam support, giving PC players more options to play Best Steam Games.
Nintendo’s retro wireless consoles are well suited to the kinds of games you find on Apple Arcade, too. Because it largely hosts smaller, more digestible games, its library is ideal for the simple button layouts (and strong build quality) of historic Nintendo consoles.
It’s updates like these that give Nintendo’s retro consoles more value now than they did at launch. It is created as a fun novelty for nintendo switch online Subscribers, I had no doubts that they would be received well enough that other companies would support them.
However, it’s always great to see, especially with other consoles like double sensation Enjoy relying on Steam and iOS too. Hopefully, full PC support for Nintendo platforms will be implemented in the future, and I’d love to see a build on Android devices as well.
