Another password manager is to get rid of passwords

Open source password manager Bitwarden has announced that it works without a password in a move it hopes will make it easier and faster for users to access their Bitwarden vaults.

In a press release, Bitwarden explained that its new mechanism, “uses the exchange of public and private keys between a web vault and an authorized and recognized mobile device,” allowing users to approve logins from their mobile device.

Bitwarden without password

Bitwarden is a member of the FIDO Alliance, one of the many companies behind launching more secure passwordless logins designed to reduce hacking and phishing to almost zero.

Supporting its commitment to the alliance are the results of an internal survey by Bitwarden, which claims that “nearly 50 percent of companies plan to deploy passwordless technologies,” with security being the main driver behind the movement.

Earlier this year, 1Password revealed that nearly half of employees are risking their secure credentials by sharing passwords. A move to make logins more personal, and less password-dependent, could be much needed news for many organizations.

With the results, DuckDuckGo has selected Bitwarden as the “first external password management solution” built into the browser on macOS devices, allowing the secure search engine to continue its work protecting users’ privacy.

Since passwordless logins have reached the mainstream at events held by Apple and Google, consumer interest has increased, but many companies have not yet added support. There are a few websites and apps where you can try this new type of authentication, including PayPal.
