The standard Samsung Galaxy S24 really caught my eye – and it could be a bargain, too
I’m usually the leading phone guy. As Pakistan Tech News’s Managing Editor of Mobile Computing, having one of the latest high-end phones on hand is good for my job, and will give you, dear readers, plenty of hot takes and thoughtful analysis.
Samsung Galaxy S24 series unveiled in the first Samsung Galaxy Unpacked of 2024, I thought the Galaxy S24 Ultra would have a stranglehold on my attention; It’s the flagship phone among the new flagships and I’m already using the Galaxy S23 Ultra. But that was not the case. Rather, it was the smaller, lower-spec Galaxy S24 that tickled the tangle of mobile technology in my gray matter. It’s been a long time since I’ve used a standard Galaxy S-series phone; The last time I put my SIM in one was in 2021 with the Galaxy S21, the phone that established the overall design language of its successive successors. I remember loving a bit the elegant combination of the phone’s design, gorgeous display, performance, and camera capabilities. However, the appeal of many other big phones like the Galaxy Ultra, Folds, and several Pixel Pro phones kept me away from the Galaxy S21. I half forgot how beautiful the most compact Galaxy phone is.

Then before Unpacked, I had the opportunity to get the Galaxy S24. A flood of nostalgia washed over me, as I remembered how great a 6.1-inch phone could be.

As you’ll see in senior phone editor Alex Walker-Todd’s hands-on review of the Samsung Galaxy S24, the newest base model offers much more than just that beautiful, palm-sized display. The trimmed bezels on the new standard Galaxy phone mean it can fit a 6.2-inch display in the same overall footprint as its predecessor. The screen is brighter too, at 2,600 nits, and can now down from 120Hz to just 1Hz to help conserve battery life – the Galaxy S23 can only go down to 48Hz. There are additional upgrades as well.

This won’t blow your mind, but the battery is now 100mAh larger, and there’s a chip upgrade in the form of an Exynos 2400 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 – depending on which part of the world you live in – the new Armor Aluminum makes for a stronger phone body with Using one-mass design. Plus, there’s a wide range of Samsung Galaxy S24 colors to choose from.

All of these little tweaks really add up to a great upgrade over the Galaxy S23, and even more so for people chewing up the upgrade from the Galaxy S22. But it’s not the main reason the Galaxy S24 caught my attention.

All the AI smartphones of the Galaxy S24 Ultra are also coming to the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus. This means access to live translation and note-taking features, powerful Genetic Edit AI technology that allows users to change the composition of a photo without any Photoshop skills, as well as take advantage of suggested edits to take a hastily taken photo and make it worthwhile. sharing. Even the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s nifty Circle to Search feature that uses the S Pen can also be used on the Galaxy S24.

As an overall package, the Galaxy S4 has a plethora of upgrades over its predecessor and a whole host of smart AI tools that can really come in handy in day-to-day use of the phone and aren’t nice to have. And it has all this at a starting price of $799 / £799 / AU$1,399.

That’s the same price (cheapest in Australia) as the $799 / £799 / AU$1,499 iPhone 15, which has a lower rear camera, a 60Hz screen, a smaller screen, a less pleasing design, and no generative AI tools.

So I think the Galaxy S24 is shaping up to be a bit of a bargain, especially since it doesn’t lack all that much compared to its Ultra stablemate. If I were to buy one of the new Galaxy phones with my own money, I think I’d be more drawn to the Galaxy S24 than I expected.

We’ll need to do a full review of the phone but the early signs are promising, and I’ll be surprised if the Galaxy S24 doesn’t score highly on our best Android phones and best phones overall lists.
