PTA Makes Local Data Hosting Mandatory for Telecom Firms

According to a report by Pakistan Tech News, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has made it binding on all telecom operators to host data locally in the country. The PTA has drafted new security regulations and invited feedback to implement this decision.

According to the officials at PTA, all licensed telecom companies will henceforth be required to possess a disaster recovery and business continuity plan. Any major cyber incident would also need to be declared to the PTA within 24 hours of the incident.

Those officials who spoke explained that the regulations were part of efforts to improve cybersecurity in the telecommunication sector. All telecom operators are required to have a CISO.
It can also impose restrictions on foreign software or equipment if needed. The new rules would mean stricter protection for users’ data and increased digital security in the country.
